During this extended TG-weekend, like many NoMi residents, I will find myself gathered together with friends and family (with one unfortunately missing). For many of them, it will not be an unfamiliar sight to see this journeyman guitar-player around a fire, either the indoor fireplace-type or the backyard kind, armed with "a loaded six string on my back." Aside from the steel-string generated ambiance, you can be sure that at least these five special dedications are at my fingertips:
5. "Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi -- Of course! Look, its a great song: its fun to play the D-G-C-F riff, it sounds terrific on a six string, and its a great sing-a-long, so don't knock it til' you have heard me play it at least 10 times...dedicated to Pond-Dragon and NoMi-girl for all of the vocal-support!;
4. "No Woman, No Cry" by Bob Marley -- Because after Brian (the drummer from the band Watson) heard Wanted Dead or Alive 10 times (or so), he gently suggested that I learn this one...(see how that works);
3. "Hole Hearted" by Extreme -- I just love the funky blues/blue grassy sound of the guitar, and I just plan connect with the lyrics: "Life's ambitions occupy my time...priorities confuse the mind..." In my household, it has become a song that we laughingly sing to the baby and it has a chorus that speaks to the situation with my daughter, which is why its dedicate to my children..."There's a whole in my heart that can only be filled by you."
2. "Redemption Song" by Bob Marley -- Ja, Marley again Man! When the night is mellow, and your deep in conversation with good company, the smooth rhythm guitar of this song hits the spot. "Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery..." Yep, good advice some need to take in NoMi-World... and there's about four days this holiday break to do just that! The dedication on this one goes out to my brother and his new fiancee who inspired me to learn it!
1. "Damn Good" by David Lee Roth -- Hey, it's a feel good song with Steve Vai on guitar and has cool harmonics! The tricky thing in this song is sustaining those harmonics on the downward hammered scale...oh, and it's played in drop-D. I'm not the only one who has had some DLR mixed into my musical upbringing...check out Bad Wim's comments...here. Ahh, I too have "Eat ‘Em and Smile" on tape...and a Spanish version "Sonrisa Salvaje." So, this one will always be dedicated to my friends: "those were the good times....DAMN Good Times [in NoMi]!"
